Construction Material Pavilion Round Table Sessions at METSTRADE 2020

 

The fourth edition of the Construction Material Pavilion Round Table Sessions dedicated to boat building construction and materials will take place on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 November as part of the METSTRADE Show, the world’s largest B2B leisure marine equipment show which runs from 17 to 19 November 2020 in the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre.

A two days meeting on design, technological innovation and sustainability which consists of 2 Round Table sessions a day of 45 minutes each scheduled in the morning and afternoon on the 17th and 18th of November. With the participation of Luigi Francesco Minerva, Project Manager, MARIN; Daniele Riva, CEO Cantiere Ernesto Riva; Rogier Eggers, Senior Project Manager, MARIN; Antonello Dimiccoli, Laura Saviano – Korec Srl and others contributors to be confirmed. For the third year, Aaron S. Porter, Editor Professional BoatBuilder magazine, will be the Round Table moderator.

Tuesday 17 November dedicated to foilers

Foiling is currently a focal point for the nautical sector capable of involving companies and research, designers and top level sailors. From the America’s Cup to innovations on standard boats up to traditional wooden boats, there are few themes that can arouse the same interest and enthusiasm.

Recent methodologies and results of investigation on hydrodynamic and hydro-elastic behaviour of hydrofoils will be presented from past performed researches at MARIN ( in collaboration with Michigan and Iowa universities) and with respect to the hydrofoil technology. In particular the adopted methodology, results and lessons learnt will be discussed for the following two topics: hydrodynamic behaviour of a generic T-foil in unsteady conditions (including cavitation); hydro-elastic behaviour and ventilation phenomena for a generic flexible wing profile.

18th of November focus on sustainability

The environmental sustainability of all human activities has taken on a particular and growing economic value over time. New scenarios open up through the introduction of new marine concepts. Wind assisted propulsion, photovoltaic, hybrid and electric engines, represent some of the most important examples introduced in the marine sector. The introduction of these innovations change and improves the relationship between user and product and between the product and the context. The marine products are conceived, designed and manufactured for different sectors, and used in multiple contexts. The wind assisted propulsion, sails design and materials is a completely new topic that arise interest from designers, researchers and builders.

The attainment of balance between costs and advantages is the real objective of all forward-looking research. The challenge is therefore in preparing technologies and management systems that make these principles feasible.

Most of boats are made up of FRP-fiber reinforced plastic, a material difficult to recycle. Korec Spa, has solved the long-standing problem of fiberglass waste recycling introducing a disruptive innovation on the market, thanks to the development of a thermochemical process capable of recovering. In addition to the glass fiber, also the organic component of the waste (resin), obtaining a liquid hat can be recycled to manufacture new fiberglass products. Tests demonstrated that it is possible to recycle both orthophthalic and isophthalic polyester resins, and vinyl esters, obtaining an organic liquid characterized, in all cases tested, by a similar degree of polymerization, regardless of the types of resin present in the original waste.
