The importance of DAME in the global marine industry is unrivalled. The awards are arranged every year as part of the METSTRADE Show, the world’s largest marine equipment event and only truly international B2B exhibition for the leisure marine industry.
As the most significant competition of its kind for new equipment and accessories, DAME set the pace for new concepts and designs in the worldwide industry over the past 25 years. This means that the category nominees receive a great deal of exposure while the eventual DAME winner becomes highly renowned within its field. DAME’s silver jubilee last year saw joint winners for the first time, with the award going to the Lume-On Lifejacket Light by Spinlock and the Electric Stabilising Fin & Interceptor System by Humphree.
“Spinlock’s deckware and hardware products have featured in the DAME on a number of occasions,” says James Hall, sales & marketing manager at this British company. “Winning in 2015 with the Lume-On Lifejacket Light reminded us of the international importance of the award. Recognised by all levels of the industry, it instantly placed Lume-On Light in the global limelight. The product became a hot topic among journalists, distributors, dealers and other trade channels, which resulted in a fantastic launch platform. Spinlock is a design-led company and each of our products aims to make a difference to the target market through innovation. Winning the DAME Award is the ultimate recognition of this innovative character and helped Spinlock continue to position itself as a global leader in its sector.”
Per Landegren, CEO of Humphree, the other joint winner of the 2015 DAME, agrees. “To launch a new and innovative product in the marine stabilizer market is quite a challenge. We knew that we had something genuinely unique with our new 24V DC Electric Stabilizing Fin System, but to make people understand all the new features available takes time. As the DAME jury comprises people with considerable knowledge and experience, it is highly respected in the business. Participating in and winning the award is an acknowledgment that we have made the right choices. It encouraged the entire Humphree team and was a great opportunity to rapidly reach out to a large part of the global marine market.”
The € 150 registration fee for entering the DAME competition is always donated to a charity. Since 2005, RAI Amsterdam has been supporting AMREF Flying Doctors and this good cause has been appointed the DAME charity recipient by the METSTRADE Exhibition Committee for every even year. The 2016 donations will contribute to the AMREF project ‘A healthy future for girls in Kilindi’, aimed at introducing an alternative rite of passage for female genital mutilation in a remote area in Tanzania as well as increasing access to safe drinking water, good sanitation and hygiene.
The DAME Design Award was initiated in 1991 to promote design across all disciplines and recognise the best-designed products at the METSTRADE exhibition. Nowadays the competition is as relevant as ever in highlighting the importance of design for all marine products, from function to aesthetics and from packaging to the end product. The DAME Jury also considers the expected impact on the marine industry of entries, their suitability for intended purpose, the level of innovation, the cost effectiveness and environmental impact.
