Building complex superyachts requires the right set of project management tools
The ongoing trend of superyachts gaining in length and complexity leads to increased standards of effective project management and collaboration and the need for more efficiency in the boat building process. A good mix between traditional project control methods in combination with elements of LEAN is a way to achieve better and in-time delivery of superyachts. This lies in line with the Quick Response Manufacturing principle. At METSTRADE 2017 we spoke with Bas Schreuder from Critical Minds. Critical Minds helps industrial organisations in the marine industry to gain lasting control over their projects.
“We believe in the power of people for successfully completing complex projects in time, on specification and within budget. The project management consultants at Critical Minds support maritime companies in delivering valuable project insights within scheduling and collaboration.” States Bas Schreuder.
“We believe that when important project information is broadly shared with all stakeholders, the ownership and awareness will increase and this is vital for effective collaboration. This in turn leads to shorter lead times, higher job satisfaction, higher efficiency and cost reduction of the projects we work on.”
There are multiple ways to accomplish such results, for example in utilizing the potential of your schedule software or using certain Lean methods for improving collaboration.
“Our focus is therefore on providing valuable insights to deliver projects effectively” Bas continues, “and with this approach we have accomplished good results with numerous parties in the superyacht industry”.
What is QRM?
Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) is a companywide strategy to cut lead times in all phases of manufacturing and office operations. It can bring your products to the market more quickly and help you compete in a rapidly changing manufacturing arena. It will increase profitability by reducing cost, enhance delivery performance and improve quality.
QRM's overarching focus on time as the guiding management strategy is ideally suited for companies offering high-mix, low-volume and custom-engineered products. In fact, many companies making highly customized products and/or a high variability in their product mix have used QRM as an addition to existing Lean, Six Sigma, and other improvement efforts.
