Back in January this year, we published details about the World Sailing Sustainability 2030 project; a multi-faceted approach towards substantially improving the impact that international sailing events have upon the ocean environment over the next 12 years.

Now in collaboration with 11th Hour Racing, World Sailing have launched a new initiative, offering a prize of $10,000 USD, which will be awarded to a worthy winner of the ‘World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award.’ The prize will be awarded in each of the next three years, in order to fund the sustainability work of the winners.

Dan Reading, World Sailing’s Sustainability Programme manager said, “the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award celebrates the effective execution or ongoing delivery of high-impact, highly replicable sustainability initiatives, aligned to the World Sailing Sustainability Agenda 2030. We would very much welcome all professionals in the international leisure marine industry to make their nominations, for which we have provided a convenient application form.”

Please note:The deadline for applications is Monday 8 October 2018.

General requirements: National Federations, sailing clubs, event organising committees, individual sailors or any other sailing related organisations that have implemented and delivered a successful sustainability initiative after November 2017 are invited to apply.

Individuals or organisations can be nominated by its own members and employees, or by another individual or organisation. The project should align with World Sailing’s objectives, demonstrate meaningful impact, be innovative and be replicable in other sailing organisations.

Award ceremony: The recipient of the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award will be invited and hosted at the 2018 World Sailing Awards, set to be held on Tuesday 30 October 2018 in Sarasota, Florida, USA, where they will be presented with an iconic perpetual trophy made from recycled carbon fibre and bioresin, as well as a $10,000 cheque.

About the World Sailing 2030 Agenda

The Vision: A world in which millions more people fall in love with sailing; inspired by the unique relationship between sport, technology and the forces of nature, and where we all work to protect the waters of the world.

Key recommendations: Delivering Sustainability through Technical Standards, embodying Sustainability principles into sailing events and regattas, incorporating Sustainability into training, through venues and facilities, and thoroughly engaging all members or sailing participants in Sustainability issues.

NOTE: The detailed agenda was finalized last May, after a 3-month consultation period across the sailing world, which METSTRADE Community members were invited to participate in. You can view it in its entirety HERE
