Anodes

Zinc is a sacrificial zinc anode used to protect metal surfaces from corrosion.

Sacrificial anode, commonly used in shipping and to protect metal structures submerged in water, is a type of galvanic anode. Made from active metals like zinc, aluminum, or magnesium, a sacrificial anode oxidizes and dissolves itself to protect the valuable metal it’s attached to from corrosion, preventing the metal from wearing away. This process is called cathodic protection and it stops the metal from rusting by preventing it from losing electrons.
