Sustainable Maritime Power Generation and Energy Storage

Energy Observer’s historic round-the-world, zero-emissions voyage was just the beginning. Completing the journey powered entirely by renewable energy, the Energy Observer 1 (EO1) catamaran proved that hydrogen-based power systems – producing energy through seawater electrolysis – could operate reliably in real-world maritime conditions without no emissions, fine particles or noise. Now, work is well underway to scale up and bring these technologies into commercial maritime and energy applications.

Back on land in France, building on the technologies tested aboard EO1, Energy Observer Developments (EODev) was created to bring clean energy solutions to everyday operations on construction sites, at live events, in off-grid environments and, increasingly, across maritime transport.

“Energy Observer was a demonstration vessel designed to raise awareness and show that clean maritime navigation is possible,” said Sébastien Filangi, head of systems engineering at EODev. “EODev was created to turn that demonstration into real products that are safe, certified and ready for industry use.”

Today, EODev’s product portfolio includes REXH₂, a modular hydrogen fuel-cell system for small to medium-sized vessels, as well as hydrogen power generators and storage solutions for stationary, off-grid and mobile energy needs. Every system is developed on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, which serves as the company’s engineering backbone.


Engineering Hydrogen Systems for Industrial Scale

Hydrogen is a good alternative low-carbon energy solution for maritime and power generator applications. Light, energy dense and fast to refuel, it is particularly well-suited to ships and heavy-duty mobility such as road freight, where maximizing energy storage within tight spatial constraints is critical. While technical hurdles remain, particularly around cost and the availability of green hydrogen, EODev is actively making the promise of hydrogen commercially viable.

“Our focus is on delivering highly efficient systems,” Filangi explained. “Even if the upfront costs of hydrogen systems are higher, they can be offset through improved efficiency. Hydrogen fuel cells operate at around 50-60% efficiency, which is significantly better than diesel or gas-based solutions.”

REXH₂ is an industrial-grade energy solution ready for real-world maritime deployment. Industrializing these types of hydrogen and battery-based systems requires rigorous engineering, close coordination with suppliers and the ability to manage multiple product variants across different markets and regulatory frameworks. All of this complexity is managed on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, which provides a single environment for design, simulation, project management and regulatory compliance, allowing EODev to accelerate development while maintaining consistency, traceability and quality across its product portfolio.

“The platform allows us to bring everything together, starting with rough architectural layouts and progressing to detailed 2D and 3D drawings,” said Paul Bénard, mechanical engineer at EODev. “We collaborate with suppliers, verify dimensions before production, and manage different product configurations for Europe, the US, Australia and other markets directly on the platform. Feedback from customers and after-sales service feeds directly into design updates. That level of traceability and change tracking is extremely valuable during certification.” 


Full Traceability for Maritime Industry Certification

As hydrogen regulations evolve, EODev has aligned its product development with certification requirements that are still being defined. By maintaining a single, traceable source of truth, the company can provide certification bodies with the right data at each milestone.

REXH₂ has already earned Type Approval Certification from Bureau Veritas, confirming its reliability and safety. This certification allows the energy system to be installed on smaller passenger ships under 500 UMS (gross tonnage of 500 or less under the Universal Measurement System).

“We started by focusing on smaller vessels because the regulatory framework for hydrogen in maritime applications is still evolving,” Filangi said. “Certification bodies were learning alongside us, and we were among the first real application cases. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform helped us document and track every step, allowing both EODev and the regulators to gain experience and mature the technology together.”

ALBA is the first electro-hydrogen training vessel certified by Bureau Veritas in Europe. This 20-meter-long boat is equipped with REXH₂ batteries that have been designed on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.


3D Collaboration in a Cloud-Based Platform

EODev relies on small, highly specialized teams and close partnerships with pioneering companies such as NAAREA to develop its energy systems. That’s why accessibility and real-time collaboration are essential. The cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform makes this possible by giving EODev’s engineers secure, anytime access to 3D data, assemblies and documentation.

“We use CATIA on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform as our core design solution,” Bénard said. “Several of us work on the same 3D models simultaneously, and external suppliers also provide their data. We use this central environment for data storage, sharing and lifecycle management, and the main benefit is collaboration. Today, the entire project team has access to the latest version of the 3D model, something that wasn’t possible with our older tools.”

This visibility supports EODev’s agile approach, whether it’s integrating standard systems such as REXH₂ on a vessel or designing bespoke energy solutions tailored to a customer’s specifications. Simulation is also fully integrated into this workflow. EODev uses SIMULIA simulation capabilities for static and mechanical calculations, applying forces to components and carrying out lightweighting to remove unnecessary material.

All solutions were integrated quickly into day-to-day engineering work, supported by a short onboarding phase and targeted training by Dassault Systèmes’ business partner CTCadtech (formerly MerForte).

“It took around two weeks for us to get up and running on the platform, with training and support from CT Cadtech,” Bénard said. “Adoption was quick, especially for users familiar with CATIA or SOLIDWORKS.”

As hydrogen adoption grows and projects increase in size and complexity, EO Dev sees the 3DEXPERIENCE platform as a long-term foundation for scaling its engineering capabilities. The company is already exploring more applications on the platform as demand evolves.

“The platform is central to our work,” Filangi said. “Every preliminary architecture is developed in CATIA, and each vessel has its own concept model on the platform. Looking ahead, if demand increases, we may explore more advanced simulation tools, such as fluid dynamics or additional certification-focused calculations.”
