Local initiatives celebrate boating around the globe 

The 2026 edition of World Boating Day, May 23, will encompass events at yards, sailing schools, boat shows and at supplier companies all around the world. Head of Public Relations Dominique Afacan presents the overview of all participants as co-organiser from the Superyacht Life Foundation and tells about the growing momentum of this global day to celebrate leisure boating.

Metstrade opening keynote addresses urgency to innovate. “We are in a transformational moment as an industry,” ICOMIA* president and NMMA** CEO Frank Hugelmeyer notes during his Breakfast Briefing opening speech at the Metstrade show. “We need to identify a new role and find the opportunities to attract a new audience.” He captured the odd energy at the show, where a sense of urgency about the setback in boat sales fuelled an optimistic longing for change and innovation. Cheryl Brown, managing director of charter company Le Boat, presented her strategy to allure newcomers to boating.

Challenging the world speed record for sailing craft, the Swiss team SP80 is developing and fine-tuning a ventilated hydrofoil that could help break the hydrodynamic boundaries that limit boat speeds to around 50 knots. Cavitation that occurs around hydrofoils at these high speeds can be eliminated in a radical new hydrofoil design. Overcoming cavitation could enable future development of low-drag, high-speed maritime transport.
